The birth of any baby is a time of excitement and tension. However, it is also a time when you feel at your most vulnerable Define Vulnerable . So, the news that your baby has Down's syndrome may be shocking and distressing. You may also feel upset by your or your partner's reactions.

Down's syndrome is not your fault. It is caused by a chromosomal accident at conception. No one knows why it happens or who will be affected.

Parents often find that soon after the birth they begin to forget about the label of Down's syndrome and see their baby as an individual. A baby with Down's syndrome is first and foremost a baby.

Many parents find it helpful to find out as much as they can about Down's syndrome. Down's Syndrome Scotland has many useful publications to download or order, as well as the information you'll find on this site. If you have other children, we also have information for them.
