Relatives and friends
When a baby is born with Down's syndrome Define Down's syndrome grandparents, relatives and friends are sometimes not sure what they should do. As with any new baby, you can be a great support to the new parents. Just do what comes naturally.
- Welcome the new baby and treat them as you would any new arrival - all babies love cuddles.
- Send a card or buy a gift if that's what you planned to do anyway.
- Offer friendship and someone to talk to when the parents are ready.
- Offer to look after the new baby (and/or other children in the family) as the parents will probably welcome some time to themselves or time with their other children.
- Remember the other children in the family.
- Find out about Down's Syndrome - this site has lots of useful information and publications to download or order.
- You could also become a member so you can keep up to date with what's going on and meet others in your area.
All babies are special.
