This module expands on the learning covered in Module 1, specifically looking at how to teach children with Down’s syndrome to read and how this positively supports language development.

Module content:

Using the whole word approach and exploring strategies using this approach to teach reading
How phonics can support the whole word approach
The importance of teaching reading and its impact on “talking”

Dr Matta

Dr Matta is a Neonatologist with a special interest in neurodisability and infant mental health. She will talk about the her paper with the same title, which she authored for Greater Glasgow & Clyde. We are currently co-developing this to be introduced as the national standard Care Pathway in Scotland.

Dr Elizabeth Herrieven

Dr Herrieven is a Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. She will join us to talk about the presentations of serious acute illness in children with Down’s syndrome.
